Reminder
Just to remind you all this is the pre-summer work;
This all needs to be done before the summer - DEADLINE 19th July.
- Research different blog sites and styles of blogs.
- This will not take long – you used blogs last year and know what you need - blogger/blogspot is very reliable, wix is a bit flash but temperamental, Wordpress doesn’t work on the Macs but is fine on other PCs. You can use the same platform or even the same blog as last year.
- If using the same blog address, archive your year 12 work Set up your blog and get the address to me – you have until the end of term to do this.
- First entry: statement of intent; who you are, what you are doing, what you did for last year’s coursework, what you hope to achieve through the project?
- Invite classmates to follow you – this will help you gather evidence of audience feedback
- What do existing texts in your chosen area look like?
- What elements make up a typical example?
- Do some research and add it to your blog as a short post
- Come up with an idea: NOT just for a your main task, but for the whole package
- Post your initial thoughts on your blog – you can always change them later.
This all needs to be done before the summer - DEADLINE 19th July.

PowerPoints from Today's Lesson
Below are the two PowerPoint presentations covered in today's lesson.
For those of you who attended the lesson you should make sure you have thought about the task on the last slide of the second presentation, as you will be expected to lead the discussions for your groups.
If you missed the lesson today then you will need to read through both of these so that you are aware of expectations, tasks and deadlines.

Independent Tasks for DLD 12th January
Year 12.
Continue working on research and planning tasks. All of you have work you can be doing!
Remember, I am expecting to see analysis of three existing magazine covers this Friday so, if that is something you are missing, these should be a priority. After that, look back at the deadlines for this half term - what can you get ahead on? Look at the suggested task list below - is there anything on there you haven't done? If you have done everything on the list look for other blogs - here, here or here, for example - and see what other tasks they have. Note - THIS and THIS blog have some excellent research examples.
Task list;
Research into institution - who would produce your magazine and why?
Image manipulation of test shots with an explanation of what you were aiming for.
Draft layouts - either hand drawn or on computer.
Audience profiling - who is your magazine for? How will you engage their interest?
Genre research - what genre of music is your magazine? How will images and fonts used reflect this?
Character creation - who is your cover star? Create a back story which will help justify photo choices and generate article copy.
EVALUATIONS!!!
The only task you won't be able to do is your cover, contents and double page spread. Nothing else requires special access to the Macs or for me to be in the building. Despite what some of you have told your form tutors!!!
Year 13
You should each have something to be getting on with - either finishing research and planning for your music video/digipak/poster or working on evaluations. I suspect none of you have completed a fully storyboard for your video. This should therefore be a priority! Again, if you have done all the suggested tasks look for example blogs to inspire you. Blogs such as Caitlin's, this one, this one or this one are all worth a look.

Year 12 Mock Exam Section B Question
To help you prepare for the mock in the little time we have I am pre-issuing the section B question. Use this along with the case studies available on the o drive as part of your revision.
"To what extent has the internet played a significant role in the marketing and exchange of media products in the film industry?"
Your mock is next Thursday during the double. You will not get the full two hours but you are expected to answer on both sections. This means you will have slightly less time to respond to the questions. Be prepared for this.

PowerPoint from this morning's lesson;
G325 a media theory and theorists_sectiona- from gdsteacher
Remember only apply the theory that fits - use theory you have already learnt first and then explore new theory in relation to your products. Don't try to shoe-horn new theory in for the sake of it.
Also the PowerPoint we looked at last week;

TV Drama - A Brief Introduction
One of the first lessons we covered for the start of year 12 was identifying aspects of Television Drama. This is the exam topic for the end of year 12 and, although we won't be looking at it in depth just yet, I thought it was valid to start thinking about.
In the lesson we looked at types of TV Drama, how they appeal to specific audiences and how certain groups are represented. You were also set a task to watch an episode of a TV Drama of your choice and write a short blog post explaining what it was you watched, who it was aimed at and how you know and how representation is used.

I will be checking blogs and commenting on posts. To make my life easier can you make sure you follow the TNHA Media blog, that way I can locate you through the blog dashboard. You also need to be tagging your blogs so that you can find them easier. Anything related to the preliminary task should be tagged as such while any work on audience for TV Drama should be tagged audience, TV Drama and so on.

We Media and Democracy
•How
far can the media in 2010 be considered to be democratic?
•Assess
the claim that the media is becoming more democratic.
•Discuss
the meanings of the term ‘we media.’
•Explore
the claim that the ‘new’ media are more democratic than the ‘old’ media.
•Explain
how some features of contemporary media are more democratic than others.
•What
is ‘we media’ and what difference does it make to citizens?
•‘We
get the media we deserve.’ Discuss, in relation to the role of media in a
democracy.
•As
a citizen, to what extent do you feel that the media provide you with a
democratic service?
So as you can see, several
previous questions focus on old media v new media, some on what might be
defined as we media and some very specifically on notions of democracy
If we look at the bullet points in the
Specification, which defines what should be studied, we should be able to
relate them to the questions set so far:
•What are
‘We Media’?
•Where /
how has ‘We Media’ emerged?
•In what way are the contemporary
media more democratic than before?
•In what ways are the contemporary
media less democratic than before?
This part of the exam asks you to do three more specific things, whatever topic you answer on:
1. You MUST refer to at least TWO different media
2. You MUST refer to past, present and future (with the emphasis on the present- contemporary examples from the past five years)
3. refer to critical/theoretical positions
For this topic, since a lot of what you
look at is likely to be online, a comparison between online media and any form
of traditional media (newspapers, broadcast news, film) would ensure you
quickly meet the criteria for no.1
For no.2, the main thing is to ensure you have a majority of material from the past five years. This really should not be a problem when using online media, and to be honest I think you could use material from the last few months to construct a really good answer!
And for no.3 you should have a range of writers that you could use- for example Dan Gillmor who coined the term 'We Media' or sceptics of the power of social media such as Evgeny Morozov or some of the advocates of people power through social media such as Clay Shirky

We Media and Democracy and Global Media
Powerpoints used in today's lesson. Remember they important slides are those that refer to the theorists e.g. Chomsky, Gillmor or Gauntlett.
You also need to find more out about Generation Y and Generation C - mostly in reference to We Media but also how the Global Media changes have affected them.
Don't forget there are aspects of both theories that can link to Postmodernism and Media Regulation.
