Exam Preparation - Year 13

PowerPoint from today's exam prep lesson;

G325 Section A - Relevant theory

PowerPoint from this morning's lesson;

G325 a media theory and theorists_sectiona- from gdsteacher

Remember only apply the theory that fits - use theory you have already learnt first and then explore new theory in relation to your products. Don't try to shoe-horn new theory in for the sake of it.

Also the PowerPoint we looked at last week;

Plus - bonus PowerPoint on Narrative theory;

Cover Lesson 11/7/16

Finish research into pre Postmodernist theory. You should aim to have about one PowerPoint slide of notes on each theorist covered last lesson. All you need is to be able to show an understanding of how postmodernism is a response to their theories.

Continue research into genres - go over the work set in the post below and make sure it is done. You should also review past examples of music videos and identify what to and what not to dos.

Finally conduct research into songs and artists. You can use sound cloud for some of this but should also consider YouTube and social networks.

If you need anymore to be getting on with, begin looking at digipaks and posters.

Coursework research and planning must be uploaded onto your blog. Exam research should be emailed to me.

An extremely long but very useful PowerPoint;

We Media and Democracy

How far can the media in 2010 be considered to be democratic?
Assess the claim that the media is becoming more democratic.
Discuss the meanings of the term ‘we media.’
Explore the claim that the ‘new’ media are more democratic than the ‘old’ media.
Explain how some features of contemporary media are more democratic than others.
What is ‘we media’ and what difference does it make to citizens?
‘We get the media we deserve.’ Discuss, in relation to the role of media in a democracy.
As a citizen, to what extent do you feel that the media provide you with a democratic service?

So as you can see, several previous questions focus on old media v new media, some on what might be defined as we media and some very specifically on notions of democracy

If we look at the bullet points in the Specification, which defines what should be studied, we should be able to relate them to the questions set so far:
What are ‘We Media’?
Where / how has ‘We Media’ emerged?
In what way are the contemporary media more democratic than before?
In what ways are the contemporary media less democratic than before?

This part of the exam asks you to do three more specific things, whatever topic you answer on:

1. You MUST refer to at least TWO different media
2. You MUST refer to past, present and future (with the emphasis on the present- contemporary examples from the past five years)
3. refer to critical/theoretical positions
           For this topic, since a lot of what you look at is likely to be online, a comparison between online media and any form of traditional media (newspapers, broadcast news, film) would ensure you quickly meet the criteria for no.1

For no.2, the main thing is to ensure you have a majority of material from the past five years. This really should not be a problem when using online media, and to be honest I think you could use material from the last few months to construct a really good answer!

And for no.3 you should have a range of writers that you could use- for example
Dan Gillmor who coined the term 'We Media' or sceptics of the power of social media such as Evgeny Morozov or some of the advocates of people power through social media such as Clay Shirky

Key Theories;
§Dan Gillmor and ‘We the Media
§Alan Rushbriger – Democracy in the decade of Google
§David Gauntlett: Web 2.0
§Karl Marx – Marxist Ideology and Capitalism
§Antonio Gramsci – Cultural Hegemony
§Noam Chomsky – ‘Manufactured Consent’
§The Fourth Estate of Democracy
§Clay Shirky and people power
§Evgeny Morozov – ‘The Net Delusion
§Graeme Turner – ‘Ordinary People and the Media
§Public Sphere Theory & Hypodermic Needle Theory

Examples of Case Studies - Look for Contemporary Equivalents.

§Facebook’s influence on the Arab Spring.
§Facebook in Egypt – bypassing ‘old media’.
§Student protests in London
§Worldwide ‘Occupy’ protests
§Role of BBM and Twitter in London riots
§Ryan Giggs super injunction – Twitter and privacy
§Blogs from soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan

We Media and Democracy and Global Media

Powerpoints used in today's lesson. Remember they important slides are those that refer to the theorists e.g. Chomsky, Gillmor or Gauntlett.

You also need to find more out about Generation Y and Generation C - mostly in reference to We Media but also how the Global Media changes have affected them.

Don't forget there are aspects of both theories that can link to Postmodernism and Media Regulation.

Easter holiday task

OOver the Easter holidays find two pieces of evidence for one of the exam questions you are studying. One should support the idea and the other argue against it.

OE.G Media and democracy in action;

OOur Screen – a democratic approach to cinema where you can pick a film and, if enough people want to see the film it will be screened.

OOn the other hand they get to set the ticket price and, if you don’t get enough people interested, they won’t run the film.

G325 Prep - Overview and Section A Focus

As we get ever closer to the exam we need to start looking at how to improve on the mocks marks. I have included, below, two presentations on the exam - one offering general information on both the exam and advanced portfolio (you can ignore the advanced portfolio stuff) and the other looks at key concepts in relation to your own production work.

I'd recommend, as your planning and research for G324 comes to an end you focus on evaluating your work and exploring your topic choice for Critical Media Perspectives. For some of the topics you do not need a case study as such but would definitely benefit from using example questions to help you prepare fully for the exam.
