Year 12 today - 25/11
The booklet can be found here; O:\Media Studies\A Level and is the pdf titled G321 Booklet (make sure you open that one and not the G324 booklet!).
I have included deadlines - planning and preparation is due in the week we get back.
Note - some of you still have a lot of tasks to catch up on!
Christmas Extravaganza - It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
Those not involved in the planning and preparation will just have to wait until the 10th December, when they will be able to come along and enjoy The Nicholas Hamond Academy's Christmas Extravaganza. On the night there will be plenty of festive food, music and fun for all the family. Students from the Academy will be putting on a performance and our resident quizmaster has promised another brilliant quiz. The event has been a sell out for the past two years so, if you don't want to miss out, you need to get tickets from The Nicholas Hamond Academy quicker than Santa can eat a plate of mince pies!

Year 12 - Missing Work and AP2
To make it easy for you to see how I have come to grading decisions, I have separated work into tasks that count towards your coursework and are being used as indication of your potential and tasks that, although they will contribute towards your final grade, do not directly impact on my judgement of your potential.
You were given a very clear deadline. Although I expect to see the missing work on your blogs, work submitted after the deadline will not be given a grade.
Coursework Preparation;
Media profile and collage
Table comparing the BBC with Warner Bros
Graded Work;
Photography task - sequencing photos to show a short scene
Storyboard for your Preliminary Task
Outline for new preliminary task - to be done at home
Notes on Narrative supported with screenshots
Narrative flowchart of your favourite film or story using Tordorov
Analysis of a film opening in the same genre as your film
Research of a media company looking at what Media it owns
Preliminary group task (done in school)
Evaluation of group preliminary task
Exam;
Notes on TV Drama and Editing techniques
Table comparing the BBC with Warner Bros
Table comparing 1960s audience to modern audiences
The only piece of work which I am not expecting to see before the end of the month is;
Preliminary Film Task (due by the end of November)
If this continues to be a problem I will be contacting home, possibly discussing your future on this course with Mr Franklin, Mr Segar and Mrs Dove.

Exam Preparation - Year 12
In the lesson on Wednesday, if you have no tasks to catch up on, you can start compiling information for your case study. You will need to pick at least one British film company (remember, if you pick Film4 you cover all three areas of production/distribution/exhibition, if you pick something like Working Title, you will need to look a companies that cover the other two areas not covered by Working Title.) and look at a number of films produced by that company.
You do need to begin this now, although your exam still seems a long way off. Once we begin the coursework proper I will expect you to split your time between exam prep and coursework tasks. Therefore when you come to lessons you should have already decided what you are going to do, rather than me giving you tasks to complete.
Some example case studies - just to give you an idea of what sort of information you should be collecting;

Year 13 checklist
Having looked through your blogs most of you seem to be bang up to date. I've compiled a checklist just in case you need it to keep track of tasks.
Analysis and comparison of Kylie over three different decades
Analysis and comparison of Avril Lavigne
Identification of song and communication with artist - if you did
Theory of music videos - Goodwin, Mulvey
Close analysis of up to three music videos in the same genre as yours
Ideas for your video - location, narrative/performance etc
Comparison of indie to major record label
Brief history of the music video
Audience analysis/profile
I think that is everything - I'm doing this from memory - check back on the blog just in case I've missed anything. These are certainly the key pieces of work.

Year 12 lesson - 4/11/14
Ongoing task is based on slide 23, with a specific focus on film. You will need to build a case study around a major film company and an independent one and knowing how the film industry has changed over time will help develop your understanding.
Could you also make sure your notes for this week's lessons are posted before Monday 10th November so I can give them a quick look. Also, don't forget you should be working on your preliminary tasks or looking ahead to see what other coursework tasks you could be doing.
Item of Interest
It is in the day time but for year 13 this is a Media Day so I would be happy to allow you the time to attend rather than coming in. Year 12s I don't know your timetable and therefore couldn't say whether you'd be able to get the permission needed to attend. If you are interested I'd suggest discussing with any teachers you may have on that day.
CAUSES
10.00am - 1.00pm
the first thrilling adaptation of the bestselling Department Q crime novels by
Jussi Adler-Olsen. Carl Mørck (Kaas, The Killing) is a disgraced

newly created Department Q. He is also allocated a new assistant, Assad
(Fares), a smart young cop. Always one to go against orders, Mørck throws them
headlong into the mystery of a politician’s disappearance five years
earlier. Believing the case to be unsolved, they embark on a dangerous
journey that will lead them into the dark underworld of
Copenhagen.

Year 12 - set tasks 15/10
I'm not with you today although you have Miss Ella as tech support should you need. I have put the clips from Monday's lesson on the O drive and I'd like you to summarise your notes from the last two lessons and support with screenshots from the clips.
You have a clip of Horatio's one liners from CSI and an example of how they are funny when taken out of the CSI franchise. As I thought, there is a clip from The Usual Suspects, look at how enigma is created - also if you haven't ever seen the whole film you really should, it is extremely clever. I've given you a Lego Star Wars, which will help you identify Propp's character types.
Once you've done that you can look through the rest of the powerpoint and, using your favourite film or story, try to create a narrative flowchart using Tordorov's model.

Year 13 - Continuing Music Videos
Over the last two weeks we have focused more closely on aspects of the music industry for example, audience, institution and representation. I expect to see blog posts covering these aspects in general as well as developing the concepts in relation to your own planning.
We have now reached a point where you are ready to complete your analysis tasks and then research, plan and prepare your music videos. Remember to use the G324 booklet and the epic task list with deadline reminders (posted below) to keep you on track.
Good luck!
Introduction to AS Media
A lot of this has been revision for some of you and, for the rest, nothing you haven't already experienced through your consumption of moving image.
The whole purpose of this is to get you thinking about not only how the camera is used, but how you might use it in your own productions. You will be completing a preliminary film task as early as next week which will demonstrate your understanding of camera movement and editing techniques.
To begin with I asked you all to complete a questionnaire and write a media profile for yourselves using your answers. I also requested a visual representation of the same information. I haven't had a chance to write my own media profile but I have done an example of the collage;
The following PowerPoints are the ones we looked at in the lessons;
I would like you to have uploaded all work so far to your blogs by the end of next week. That includes the tasks I set for this week and your photography task. The photography task includes the shots you took and your evaluations as well as your comments and feedback on three of someone else's shots as well as the list of shot types and examples. You can upload PowerPoints to Slideshare and embed them to get them on your blog.
Wednesday, 16 July 2014
Reminder.
All posts should be tagged with G324 and Music Videos and then, depending on focus, tags such as Music Video Research/Digipak Research/Poster Research etc should be used. Refer back to the G324 booklet for guidance on creating blogs.
We should be getting into the habit of blogging at least once a week. Posts should cover, general research/learning, your music video analysis, analysis of existing examples of the media (e.g. digipaks, posters and websites), updates on your planning process and links to relevant sites/resources.
Throughout the holidays I will be looking at your blogs and commenting on the posts to give you specific feedback in relation to marking criteria and coursework expectations.

G324 Music Video
Although you don't need to look at the videos again, I have included the playlists (above) for the two artists we looked at. I have added a couple more videos so, if you wanted to, you could use either of these artists as part of your case study.
I'm also in the process of putting together a couple of other playlists so keep an eye out for those!

Audience Profiles
Jaust a reminder that you have to include audience research in your research and planning section of your blog. It should consist of the following...
- An audience profile of your target audience (TA), using demographics and explaining why they would be your target audience.
- A lifestyle breakdown of your TA, with notes on why the openingin particular would appeal to them.
- A rating proposal for your film, with reference to the BBFC classifications.
- Secondary research into target audiences of similar films, with stats etc.

Evaluations
It is now time for you to be sorting out your evaluations. I have posted the questions below, along with some guidance from the exam board. Remember - the more ICT you use (and different types) the better mark you will get. Good luck and ask if you are unsure.
In the evaluation the following seven questions must be addressed:
• In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
• How does your media product represent particular social groups?
• What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
• Who would be the audience for your media product?
• How did you attract/address your audience?
• What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
• Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

More Podcast Extras
There have been some really interesting podcasts recently which would be great extra reading(listening) for section B of G322 (that's the exam for Lukas). I have listed a summary here for each one. All are from ther Radio 4 Film Programme and can be downloaded following this link...
Radio 4 Film Programme Podcasts
13th February 2014 - 12 minutes in
Charles Gant (a film industry analyst) looks at how films vary in success in different regions. Specific examples include the huge US/UK flop of The Lone Ranger, which was actually really successful in Japan and Pacific Rim which was really popular in China, as well as About Time, a Ruichard Curtis film, that was huge in South Korea. This example is elaborated on by Tim Bevan, co-chairman of Working Title. This is particularly important at the monment as we start to look at audiences. Quoting him in your answers (where relevant) would be a very good idea.
16th February 2014 - from start
This is the BAFTA special podcast. There is quite an interesting discussion about what it means to be a British film. There is also a good sound byte from Alfonso Cuaron (director of Gravity) as part of it.
Enjoy.
